Peshawar Zalmi Innings
Two changes in Zalmi’s squad from the last night’s defeat against Islamabad United. Asghar, Wessels replaced Ibtisam and Fletcher. Skipper Darren Sammy said before the game, ‘we need to build partnerships that can take the game away from our opposition. That’s what we need to do today’. We witnessed a new opening pair: Mohammad Hafeez and Kamran Akmal. Mohammad Nawaz, left-arm spin, started things off. On the third ball of the opening over, Akmal went for golden duck. Beaten for pace, the ball brushed past the outside of off stump. Dwayne Smith came to the crease and provided a strong foundation for Zalmi. After the first powerplay, Zalmi stood 37/1 with the run rate of 6.16 runs per over.
After a healthy partnership of 56 runs before both the players standing on crease, Zalmi suffered another loss of a wicket in the 9th over. Smith, just one run short of half century, got dismissed off Watson’s delivery. But he very much assembled the innings for Zalmi. After his dismissal, Peshawar lost three more wickets in a quick succession including the heavyweights, Hafeez and Dawson.
Peshawar Zalmi managed to get above 150 thanks to a brilliant knock from captain Darren Sammy who is still only partially fit. His 19-ball 36 powered them to 157. It was a respectable total for Quetta to chase.
Fall of Wickets:
1-5 (Kamran Akmal, 0.3 over)
2-61 (Dwayne Smith, 8.2 over)
3-89 (Mohammad Hafeez, 11.3 over)
4-95 (Khushdil Shah, 13.1 over)
5-101 (Liam Dawson, 14.3 over)
Quetta Gladiators Innings
The opening partnership of Quetta failed to provide much for the team as in 5th over, Asad Shafiq got dismissed off Hasan’s delivery. But Shane Watson on the other end, set the early tone for Quetta Gladiators as he scored 37 runs off 25 balls. After the first powerplay, Quetta looked in a dangerous position, 41 for 1.
They needed to push their run rate and that’s what Quetta’s big gun, Kevin Pietersen, provided. He displayed a cameo scoring 21 runs off just 9 deliveries. By the time 11th over arrived, Quetta were 84/4.
Skipper Sarfraz Ahmed and Rilee Rossouw stayed till the end scoring 45 off 31 and 30 off 27 respectively and took their team to victory. The 73-run partnership between the players was spectacular. When they came together, Peshawar had the edge, but the pair found confidence batting together.
Quetta goes to the top of the table with 10 points, while Peshawar, with three losses and five wins, are dangerously close to elimination, sitting in fifth place.
Fall of Wickets:
1-30 (Asad Shafiq, 4.1 over)
2-54 (Shane Watson, 7.2 over)
3-69 (Kevin Pietersen, 8.6 over)
4-84 (Rameez Raja, 10.4 over)
